Sunspots, also known as age spots or freckles, are areas of pigmentation caused by sun exposure over time. They commonly appear on the face, hands, chest and other sun-exposed areas.

Laser technology targets the pigment within the sunspot, breaking it down while minimising damage to the surrounding skin. The treated pigment is then gradually cleared by the body.

Many sunspots can be significantly reduced or removed after a single treatment. However, some patients may require a touch-up treatment if residual pigmentation remains.

Most patients find the treatment very tolerable. A topical anaesthetic can be applied beforehand to address comfort during the procedure.

Laser treatment is generally considered safe when performed on benign lesions. It is important to have any sunspot assessed by a qualified skin cancer practitioner before treatment.

Redness, swelling, crusting and scabbing are common after treatment. As the skin heals, the treated area gradually fades and new skin develops underneath.

Although uncommon, risks may include infection, scarring, blistering, or temporary changes in skin pigmentation. Your practitioner will discuss these risks during the consultation.

You should avoid sun exposure, picking at scabs, and using active skincare products such as retinol, glycolic acid and chemical peels until the area has healed.
