Lower Body Lift (Belt Lipectomy) Sydney
A Lower Body Lift, also known as a Belt Lipectomy or 360 Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty), is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and tissue from the abdomen, lower back and buttock region, flanks and upper outer thighs. It combines a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) and Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) in one operation, with a circumferential scar that sits below the underwear line.
Why Consider a Lower Body Lift
A Lower Body Lift, also known as a Belt Lipectomy or 360 Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty), is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and tissue from the abdomen, lower back and buttock region, flanks and upper outer thighs. It combines a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) and Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) in one operation, with a circumferential scar that sits below the underwear line.
Assessment & Surgical Planning with Dr Dona
Following significant weight loss, most individuals experience loose or excess skin in multiple areas of the body. Every person and every part of the body is affected differently, with some regions typically of greater concern than others. For this reason, Dr Dona conducts a thorough assessment to plan a surgical approach tailored to each individual’s anatomy and goals.
During the consultation, Dr Dona carefully evaluates areas such as:
- Abdominal wall – skin and muscle layer (assessing for any rectus divarication and hernias)
- Mons or pubic region
- Lower and mid-back
- Buttocks
- Flanks
- Upper outer thighs
This detailed assessment helps determine the most suitable surgical procedure and the likely scar placement. In a Lower Body Lift, for example, a circumferential scar is typically positioned within the beltline. However, the exact position and length of scars may vary depending on the areas requiring correction and the type of abdominoplasty performed.
Related Procedures & Terminology
A Lower Body Lift may also be referred to as a Belt Lipectomy, 360 Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty), Circumferential Abdominoplasty or Lower Truncoplasty. While the terminology can differ, these names effectively describe the same procedure. Dr Dona will explain the details of the surgery and discuss the approach most suitable for each individual.
What Exactly Does a Lower Body Lift Achieve?
If you think of all the potential issues excess skin can create along your belt line, this is what the Belt Lipectomy operation addresses.
Firstly, it is an Abdominoplasty, which can be a Standard, Fleur De Lis, or Dr Dona’s custom Open Book Tummy Tuck™.
Therefore, all the benefits that are achieved with a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) also exist with a Belt Lipectomy. This includes all the known physical benefits of the associated Rectus Divarication Repair, such as potentially improved lower back pain, stress incontinence and core strength.
It also includes the hygiene and social benefits associated with lifting and repairing a ptotic (droopy) mons region.
In addition to the Abdominoplasty benefits, the Belt Lipectomy also lifts the upper outer thighs and buttocks and reduces the flanks.
All of this is achieved with a single continuous circumferential scar along your beltline, which can be comfortably concealed with regular underwear.
Combining a Lower Body Lift With Other Procedures
After significant weight loss, it’s common to have areas of excess skin in more than one part of the body. For this reason, some individuals choose to have additional procedures along with a Lower Body Lift, to address other areas of concern, such as the back, breasts, arms or thighs.
Each person’s needs are different, so Dr Dona develops a tailored surgical plan for every individual. In some cases, procedures can be safely combined in a single operation, while in others, it may be safer and optimal to stage them over time.
Because larger surgeries carry higher risks and longer recovery times, factors such as overall health, safety and logistics are carefully considered before deciding on the best approach.
Procedures that may sometimes be performed with a Lower Body Lift include:
- Breast Augmentation
- Breast Reduction
- Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
- Brachioplasty (Arm reduction)
Your Initial Consultation with Dr Dona
Your initial consultation provides an opportunity to discuss a Lower Body Lift in detail and understand what the procedure involves.
During this appointment, Dr Dona will:
- Discuss your concerns, goals and expectations
- Review your medical history
- Examine the relevant areas to determine the most appropriate surgical considerations.
Following this, Dr Dona will explain the possible surgical approach, recovery process and potential risks and complications. He will also take the time to answer your questions and ensure you have all the information you need before deciding how to proceed.
Recovery & Post-operative Care
On the day you are discharged from hospital, you will have your first in-clinic appointment with one of our Registered Nurses. Following this, you’ll attend regular review visits with Dr Dona and the nursing team. These appointments allow for close monitoring of your recovery, wound care, and any treatments that may assist healing and comfort. As part of your recovery plan, you may also take part in our HeaLED Program, designed to support the healing process and assist with swelling and scar management. The HeaLED Program includes:
- LED Light Therapy – May help reduce swelling and discomfort while promoting tissue repair.
- Rejuran Therapy – May support skin strength and collagen production during recovery.
- Medical-grade Skincare – Helps protect and support the skin as it heals. This comprehensive care approach is designed to assist your recovery and overall well-being throughout your healing journey.
Nurse & Home Care Support
When you return home from hospital, your movement will be limited, and you may require assistance with daily activities such as showering, meal preparation, household tasks and driving. If support at home is not available, you may want to arrange external nursing or in-home care services.
If you have Private Health Insurance, your provider may contribute to transport or short-term nursing care costs. It’s recommended that you contact your health fund directly to confirm what level of cover applies.
For home visit services, we recommend:
For transport, several nursing transport companies are available to take you from the hospital to our clinic for your appointments.
- MediRide (T 02 9666 7930)
- National Patient Transfer
Camouflage Tattooing for Scar Management
In the first few weeks after surgery, we focus on optimising scar outcomes through light therapy and other supportive treatments. For patients who remain concerned about the appearance of their scars after healing, camouflage tattooing may be an option. This treatment is usually considered at least 12 months post-surgery, once scars have fully matured.
Camouflage tattooing uses colour-matched pigment to blend the scar with the surrounding skin, helping reduce its visibility and create a more natural appearance.
Will I receive a Medicare rebate?
In some cases, reconstructive surgical procedures are assigned a Medicare item number. Where applicable, this can result in a partial rebate. However, rebates typically cover only a small portion of the overall surgical costs.
Will my Private Health Insurance fund give me a rebate?
If your procedure has been assigned one or more Medicare item numbers, you may be able to claim benefits through your Private Health Insurance. In most cases, health funds cover hospital-related costs, apart from any applicable excess (commonly around $500). However, only a portion of Dr Dona’s surgical fee is typically covered.
