Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Sydney Before & After Gallery
Are you concerned about excess skin above and below the navel after massive weight loss surgery? This page contains information and images of real patients who have undergone Fleur De Lis (Abdominoplasty) procedures here in Sydney.
What is a Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?
- The Fleur De Lis (FDL) Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure to reduce significant amounts of excess skin in the abdominal area.
- The surgical approach involves bidirectional scars, one under the underwear line, and a vertical scar from the midline of the abdomen to chest wall.
- This allows removal and tightening of excess skin along the sides to help bring in the waist, which allows for tightening both horizontally and vertically.
It is usually performed after:
- Major weight loss surgery – where individuals are seekinga tighter upper and lower abdominal area and where weight has been stable for six months.
- Weight loss medication – where individuals would like to remove excess skin after weight loss medications (such as GLP-1 inhibitors) and where their weight has been stable for at least six months.
- Functional issues – where individuals are experiencing skin infections or other functional issues due to excess skin that impacts showering, hygiene and daily life.
A Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) requires a minimum two-night hospital stay and is performed under general anaesthetic at Westmead Private Hospital or Norwest Private Hospital.

Can I have an FDL Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) after using weight loss medications or undergoing weight loss surgery?
Yes, if you have maintained a stable weight for at least 6 months before undergoing surgery.
Do I need to be at my ideal weight before surgery?
You do not need to be at your ideal weight before undergoing surgery – most of us never are at our ideal weight. With that said, you need to ensure that you are of a stable weight for at least six months.
Do I have to stop taking my weight loss medication before or after surgery?
- No, you do not need to stop your weight loss (GLP-1 )medication before surgery or after surgery.
- Some specific pre-operative precautions as it relates to weight loss medication, must be followed to minimise risk during anaesthesia.
- This includes following a clear fluid diet for a strict 24-hour period and fasting from ALL fluids and solids for 6 hours before surgery.
- This approach helps reduce the risk of retained gastric contents, which can lead to complications such as aspiration during sedation or general anaesthesia.
Is muscle repair always included?
Muscle repair is a part of the Fleur De Lis (Abdominoplasty) procedure, and this helps correct diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles), which frequently occurs after pregnancy r significant weight loss.
Can Fleur De Lis (Abdominoplasty) be performed with other procedures?
- Massive weight loss often results in problematic excess skin on multiple body parts including the arms, chest, back, buttocks and thighs.
- For some individuals, based on their unique circumstances, it may be possible to combine other procedures with a Fleur De Lis (Abdominoplasty procedure).
- However, for many patients a single procedure is not always advised and more surgeries mean more possible complications.
- For these individuals, staged surgeries at different times may be required.
Liposuction and FDL Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
In most cases, Liposuction is not required. However, if it is clinically appropriate or requested, Dr Dona can incorporate Liposuction into the procedure.
Who is a suitable candidate for the Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?
This procedure is suited for individuals who don’t mind a more noticeable bi-directional scar. It is often requested to target excess skin in both directions, above and below the navel.
What kind of scar can I expect from a Fleur De Lis (Abdominoplasty)?
The Fleur De Lis (Abdominoplasty) incisions involve two scars in an Anchor formation.
- Scar one – as a horizontal line low on the abdomen, just above the pubic area, and designed to sit below the line of underwear and swimwear.
- Scar two – as a vertical midline scar which joins the lower abdominal scar.
Following surgery, Fleur De Lis (Abdominoplasty) patients receive a tailored HeaLED Post-Operative Care Plan which involves the use of light therapy and medical-grade skin care products, designed to expedite the healing process and optimise scar outcomes. Microneedling is offered as an adjunct treatment to help with scar management.
What is the recovery timeline after a Fleur De Lis (Abdominoplasty) procedure?
The total recovery time for an FDL(generally a two-four hour surgery procedure) is as follows:
- On average, patients will spend two nights in hospital, following FDL (Abdominoplasty) surgery.
- Patients will be discharged from hospital and come straight to our clinic for their first HeaLED Post-Surgery Care treatment and continue having treatment for up to five weeks post-surgery. This post-operative care plan is designed to reduce pain and discomfort and increase mobility.
- Most patients are comfortable to drive two weeks after surgery.
- After two weeks you can consider returning work if it involves home office-based work.
- After six weeks, most patients return to work and life asnormal.
- When it comes to heavy weight training or other strenuous actives, ease into it gently and listen to your body.
- No heavy lifting for six weeks.
