Are you considering Breast Augmentation to address concerns with breast size and shape?
Dr Eddy Dona is committed to putting patients front and centre of their own aesthetic journey, by providing galleries, FAQs and videos to help you make well-informed decisions every step of the way.
What is Breast Augmentation?
One of Australia’s most-requested aesthetic surgery procedures, Breast Augmentation is often performed to:
- Increase volume, fullness and projection
- Increase breast volume following pregnancy, weight loss or ageing
- Can be combined with a more extensive Breast Lift BAM surgery (Breast Augmentation Mastopexy) to also address breast ptosis, or breast droop.
- BAM can also be combined to address other issues at the same time such as inverted nipples

Round v tear drop breast implants: what’s the difference?
Round implants are often considered when:
- The concern is primarily about size and fullness
- Individuals are seeking uniform volume
- There is a desire for increased upper breast volume
- There is very mild ptosis (sagging)
- There is small, minimal pre-existing breast volume
- There is well-defined breast shape
Tear drop implants are often considered when
- Individuals want to emulate natural breast curvature
- There is a decent amount of natural breast tissue
- Individuals seek increased lower breast volume
- There is mild ptosis or sagging
- Inverted nipple surgery or misshapen breasts also need to be addressed
The Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is generally performed as a day procedure at Kingsgrove Day Hospital under general anaesthetic.

Will breast implants look ‘stuck on’?
- Dual plane surgical techniques help prevent the ‘stuck on’ look, by positioning the implant partly beneath the chest muscle (allowing the upper part of the implant to be covered by the breast tissue) and partly above the muscle. This may help create a smoother transition from the chest wall to the breast.
- In some rare cases, round implants may be placed above the muscle.
Also called sub-glandular placement, this approach is typically used in patients with specific needs such as athletes, bodybuilders or pole dancers who require minimal downtime, fast recovery and who prefer less muscle involvement.
The downside of this approach is that it is more likely to result in the rare complication of a more visible implant edge.
- Of course, the final appearance of breast implants depends on implant size, profile, placement and the individual’s individual anatomy, pre-existing breast tissue, skin elasticity and general health.
How important is cup size and ccs really?
- Although this is one of our most asked questions, cup size is unreliable for surgical planning because it doesn’t necessarily correlate to implant volume or breast size.
- In fact, cup size is based solely on a bra-fitting size – technically the difference between the measurement under the bust and across the fullest part of the breast.
Furthermore, cup sizing changes markedly depend on what part of the world you live in and varies markedly between brands.
- Similarly, CCs (cubic centimetres), the measure used for the volume of implants, is not the be all and end all when it comes to making informed implant decisions.
It’s also critical to weigh up other factors that impact final breast and cleavage outcomes.
- Firstly, Dr Dona will determine the ‘breast footprint’ or the diameter of chest wall to the underarm, to ascertain which sized implant is required to occupy that space.
- After that Dr Dona will discuss the implant profile (high-sitting, medium or low), implant projection (a direct measurement of cm outwards).
- Finally, he will discuss the suitability of round or anatomical (teardrop) shaped implants as well as smooth or textured implants.
- This video with Dr Dona on Instagram explains why letting go of ‘cup size’ thinking leads to more realistic expectations.
What is the scar approach for Breast Augmentation?
- The scar for Breast Augmentation can be minimal with the Bio Lift™ approach (Breast Implant Only), where the scar is camouflaged in the breast folds.
This is recommended where volume is desired, but ptosis (droop) is not such an issue.
- The most popular augmentation procedure we do is the BAM (Breast Augmentation Mastopexy), which combines implants and a Breast Lift in a single procedure.
- This addresses both volume AND ptosis.
- The scar for the BAM procedure is called the ‘Anchor Scar’, which also involves two further scars, one small circular scar around the nipple as well as a vertical scar from under the nipple to the breast fold.
What is recovery like for Breast Augmentation?
Breast Augmentation surgical time is about 60-90 minutes. For the first few days after surgery patients experience swelling, bruising and discomfort as the body begins to heal. It is essential to:
- Take medication for pain and swelling as directed.
- Following surgery, Breast Augmentation patients receive a tailored HeaLED Post-Surgery Care Plan which involves the use of light therapy and medical-grade skin care products, designed to expedite the healing process and optimise scar outcomes. Microneedling is offered as an adjunct treatment to help with scar management.
- Typically, this commences the day after discharge from Kingsgrove Day Hospital and involves multiple in-clinic visits weekly for several weeks.
- You can shower (with assistance) right away when you return home.
- A waterproof dressing will be applied over the incisions under the breast.
- Driving can typically commence after seven days.
- Start gentle walking with assistance when you return home, as the pain medication can cause you to feel light-headed, dizzy and sleepy.
- Most individuals can return to work within one week, if the job is not physically demanding.
- You should continue to avoid strenuous activities, including weightlifting or heavy work-related duties for six weeks post-surgery.
When will I see results of my Breast Augmentation?
- Scar appearance should gradually improve over the first few weeks post-surgery
- By one month, most of the swelling will have dissipated, although some very mild swelling can persist for months in some people.
- By this time, results of your Breast Augmentation should start to be visible, although breasts may still feel numb or sensitive.
- By six months, breasts should have settled into their new size and shape and a supportive bra is always recommended.
Total recovery takes about three to six months. Remember, your implants are not fragile and you can do everyday activities with clearance from your doctor.
