Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) Sydney
A Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the lower back and buttock area. It is most often performed for functional reasons, such as relieving physical discomfort caused by excess skin, improving ease of movement and addressing issues like skin irritation or rashes. The procedure is sometimes called a Lower Back Lift. When combined with a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty), it involves a circumferential incision and is known as a Belt Lipectomy.
What Is a Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy)?
Following significant weight loss, some individuals experience excess skin in various areas of the body. A Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) may be performed as a standalone procedure, after an Abdominoplasty or in combination with other surgical procedures to address excess skin.
A Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) typically involves a surgical incision positioned along the upper buttock, extending around the sides and in some cases, toward the lower abdominal wall. When combined with an Abdominoplasty as part of a Belt Lipectomy, the incision extends circumferentially around the body within the standard ‘belt line’. This combined procedure is also referred to as a 360 Abdominoplasty.
Why Individuals May Consider a Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy)
Following significant weight loss, excess skin around the lower back and buttocks can cause both physical and practical difficulties. Common reasons patients consider this procedure include:
- Functional discomfort – such as irritation, skin rashes or chafing caused by excess folds of skin.
• Difficulty with clothing – including challenges finding comfortable or well-fitting garments.
• Restricted mobility – where excess skin may make physical movement or exercise uncomfortable.
• Personal confidence – some individuals may also feel self-conscious about the appearance of excess skin after their weight loss journey.
A Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) is designed to address these issues by removing excess skin and recontouring the area to support both function and comfort.
Combining a Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) with Other Procedures
A Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) is often performed on individuals who have undergone significant weight loss, which can leave excess skin and tissue affecting several areas of the body. Common areas of concern include the arms, breasts, back, abdomen and thighs and it is not unusual for patients to require or request surgery in more than one of these regions.
A Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) is frequently combined with a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) as part of a Belt Lipectomy. In some cases, it may also be performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a Breast Reduction or Arm Reduction (Brachioplasty).
When planning combined or staged procedures, several factors are carefully considered, including the patient’s overall health, recovery requirements, and logistical and financial considerations. In many cases, procedures are scheduled in stages to allow appropriate recovery time between operations and to reduce surgical risk.
Your Initial Consultation with Dr Dona
Your consultation with Dr Dona is the first step in determining whether a Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) is suitable for you. This appointment provides an opportunity to discuss your goals, areas of concern, and overall health in detail.
During your consultation, Dr Dona will typically cover:
- Your specific concerns and desired outcomes
- Your medical history and any previous procedures
- An examination of areas affected by excess skin or related functional issues, such as discomfort in clothing, skin irritation, or rashes
- The most appropriate surgical options for your situation
After completing a thorough assessment, Dr Dona will outline a personalised surgical plan, explaining the procedure, recovery process, potential risks and complications and information about costs and insurance. This allows you to make an informed decision about how you would like to proceed.
Dr Dona encourages open communication and takes the time to answer all questions, ensuring you feel comfortable and well-informed before making any decisions.
Weight loss medications and surgery
Before undergoing a Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy), it is important to understand the pre-surgical requirements regarding weight-loss medication. If you are taking prescription weight loss medication, such as a GLP-1 receptor agonist or a dual GLP-1/GIP agonist, specific precautions should be followed before surgery. These measures are designed to help ensure your safety and minimise potential risks associated with anaesthesia.
Travelling from out of town?
Many patients from interstate and overseas travel to our clinic in Bella Vista, Sydney, to see Dr Dona. To help make your trip as smooth as possible, we’ve created an information page for patients travelling for surgery. It includes details about referrals, pre-surgical consultations, local accommodation, post-operative nursing support and transport options.
For those undergoing a Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy), it is recommended to remain in Sydney for approximately three weeks after surgery. During this period, you will attend regular in-clinic appointments for post-operative monitoring, wound care and treatments such as light therapy. Once you return home, follow-up consultations can be arranged via Zoom to review your recovery and progress.
Recovery and Your Post-operative Care Plan
Before your Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy), you will receive detailed instructions outlining your post-operative care requirements. Your follow-up care begins shortly after surgery and includes a series of weekly in-clinic appointments with our nursing team, continuing for several weeks as clinically indicated.
These visits allow our nurses and Dr Dona to closely monitor your progress, provide wound care and guide you through each stage of the healing process.
As part of your recovery, you’ll also have access to our HeaLED Program – a structured plan designed to promote recovery, minimise swelling and support optimal scar healing.
Key components of the HeaLED Program include:
• LED Light Therapy – Helps reduce swelling and inflammation while supporting tissue repair.
• Rejuran Therapy – Aims to stimulate collagen production, strengthen the skin and improve overall skin quality.
• Medical-Grade Skincare – Supports the skin’s health and assists with scar care throughout the recovery process.
In some cases, Microneedling may also be recommended to help with scar management. Together, these treatments are designed to help you recover comfortably and achieve the best possible outcome.
Potential risks & complications
All surgical procedures have potential risks and complications. We encourage you to be aware of these before making any decisions about surgery.
Specific risks & complications related to a Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy)
- Asymmetry: There may be unevenness of the skin or differences between the right and left sides.
- Circulation: This may be poor in the skin around the surgical area, leading to skin loss and a wound that must be dressed until healed. Such wounds may require further surgery until healed.
- Further surgery (fine-tuning): this may be required to ‘fine-tune’ the results, particularly if a Belt Lipectomy has been performed (combining an Abdominoplasty with the Buttock Lift procedure).
- Loss of sensation: A loss of sensation around the scars is to be expected. Some of the sensation may return, while some will be permanent.
- Scars: Ideally, your scars should become thin white lines after 12 to 18 months. However, they can become dark and thick, hypertrophic or even keloid.
- Seromas: This is where fluid builds up under the wound. If this occurs, the seroma may need to be drained with a needle.
- Swelling: This is normal after surgery. Although sometimes, the swelling may take several months to resolve.
FAQs
How long will I stay in hospital after a Buttock Lift?
Most patients stay in hospital for two nights following surgery and are usually discharged mid-morning on the second day.
What happens after I’m discharged from hospital?
After leaving hospital, patients attend their first in-clinic HeaLED post-operative appointment at our clinic. During this visit, dressings are removed, and the incisions are treated with Light-Emitting Diode (LED) therapy and Rejuran therapy. Patients are also given medical-grade skincare products for home use. Before leaving the clinic, the incisions are re-covered with medical tape.
How long should interstate patients stay in Sydney after surgery?
For patients travelling from interstate, it is generally recommended to stay in Sydney for approximately three weeks from the day of surgery. This allows for adequate post-operative treatment, close monitoring of incisions and ongoing support throughout the recovery process.
How often will I need follow-up appointments?
Patients continue to attend regular in-clinic appointments in the weeks following surgery for wound care, monitoring and additional HeaLED treatments as part of their recovery.
How are scars managed after surgery?
Scars are managed through the HeaLED program, which is designed to support the healing process and assist with scar care throughout recovery.
How long does recovery take?
Recovery times vary between individuals and depend on the extent of surgery. Most patients will need several weeks before returning to normal daily activities, and Dr Dona will provide specific guidance based on your progress.
What is the recovery process like after a Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy)?
Recovery following a Buttock Lift (Gluteal Lipectomy) requires rest and a gradual return to activity. During the first week, patients are encouraged to take things slowly and focus on light activities only.
While in hospital, the physiotherapy team will assist with gentle movement, beginning with sitting out of bed in a chair and progressing to short walks along the hospital corridor. Once home and with appropriate support, patients are encouraged to continue taking short walks around the house to help maintain circulation and mobility.
Light duties can usually be resumed as comfort allows, using your own judgement and following guidance from Dr Dona and our nursing team. Some individuals may return to office-based work within two to three weeks after surgery. Around six weeks post-surgery, most normal activities, including heavier lifting, can be resumed, gradually as recovery progresses.
When can I return to work or physical activity?
Light activities can usually be resumed after a few weeks, depending on comfort and recovery. Strenuous activity or exercise should be avoided until cleared by Dr Dona during your six-week post-surgery follow-up appointment.
When will I see results?
Changes are noticeable once swelling begins to settle, although it can take several months for the area to heal fully and for the final contour to become apparent. Dr Dona will review your progress during your follow-up appointments and discuss what to expect over time.
