BIO Lift™ (Breast Implant Only Lift) Sydney

A traditional Breast Lift (Mastopexy) typically includes scars around the areola, vertically along the breast tissue and within the breast fold. In contrast, A BIO Lift™ (‘Breast Implant Only Lift’) only involves a small incision within the lower breast fold, which is required to insert the breast implant.

Suitable candidates for a BIO Lift™

A BIO Lift™ may be considered for individuals with mild to moderate breast droop (ptosis) who would like additional breast volume and prefer an option that does not involve the scarring patterns of a traditional Breast Lift (Mastopexy). Therefore, it’s essential to understand the distinction between breast droop and breast deflation.

Breast droop (ptosis) occurs when the breast tissue and skin gradually descend over time. The nipple may sit lower on the breast and, in some cases, point downward. This can happen as the skin stretches and thins, and the breast tissue becomes softer or reduces in volume, often with a portion of the tissue positioned below the breast fold. Breast droop can develop due to factors such as pregnancy, weight changes or the natural ageing process.

Breast deflation refers to a reduction in breast volume or fullness, which can result in the breasts appearing less full. In most cases, the nipple continues to point forward, and the remaining breast tissue and skin sit above the lower breast fold.

The BIO Lift™ procedure may not be suitable for individuals with significant breast droop. In such cases, other surgical options, such as a formal Breast Lift (Mastopexy) or a combined Breast Lift with implants, may be more appropriate.

Some people with mild to moderate droop may wish to avoid the scars associated with a traditional Breast Lift (Mastopexy) but want to achieve the additional fullness within a bra and clothing.  However, they accept a degree of residual droop when naked. For these individuals, a BIO Lift™ may be considered an option following consultation with Dr Dona.

If, after recovery, there is concern about some residual natural breast tissue droop and the patient wants to further alter the position of their breasts, a traditional Breast Lift (Mastopexy) may be performed at a later stage (if clinically appropriate).

The BIO Lift™: How is it achieved with only implants?

The BIO Lift™ is a surgical approach used by Dr Eddy Dona that incorporates three main components:

  • A planned method of Breast Implant placement
  • The use of implant shapes and dimensions selected to support the breast tissue and nipple position
    • Carefully customised internal breast tissue manipulation

Benefits of the BIO Lift™

  • Reduced scarring – The BIO Lift™ involves an incision placed within the breast fold, avoiding the additional incisions typically used in a traditional Breast Lift (Mastopexy).
  • Single-stage procedure – This procedure uses Breast Implants without the need for skin excision or tissue removal.
  • Adds fullness – Implants can help achieve breast fullness where volume has decreased.
  • Suitable for mild to moderate breast ptosis – The BIO Lift™ may be considered for individuals with a mild to moderate degree of breast droop (ptosis), who do not require or wish to have a traditional Breast Lift (Mastopexy).

Your Initial Consultation with Dr Dona

During your consultation, Dr Eddy Dona will assess your individual circumstances and determine whether a BIO Lift™ may be an appropriate option for you.

Your consultation will include a discussion about:

  • Your concerns and treatment preferences
  • Your medical history and any previous breast procedures

Additionally, you’ll receive an examination to assess breast anatomy and determine potential options.

If suitable, Dr Dona will explain the procedure in detail, costs and relevant medical and surgical considerations such as potential risks and complications.

The consultation is an opportunity to obtain detailed information and ask questions before deciding whether to proceed.

What’s the difference between a Breast Lift (Mastopexy) and Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation (Implant surgery) and Breast Lift (Mastopexy) are two distinct procedures that address different anatomical concerns.

  • Breast Augmentation: This procedure involves the placement of silicone implants to alter breast volume. It typically requires a single incision, most often positioned within the breast fold.
  • Breast Lift: This procedure involves repositioning and reshaping existing breast tissue to address moderate to severe drooping (ptosis) without changing breast volume. It generally requires incisions around the areola, vertically down the breast and within the breast fold.

In some cases, a combination procedure known as Breast Augmentation-Mastopexy may be considered for individuals who have both volume loss and drooping. This approach allows for both implant placement and skin and tissue repositioning during the same operation, depending on the individual’s anatomy and goals discussed during consultation.

Recovery and Your Post-operative Care Plan

Before your procedure, you will receive a tailored Post-Operative Care Plan outlining the recommended steps to support your recovery. Care typically begins shortly after surgery, with a series of follow-up appointments over the following weeks. These visits allow the nursing team and Dr Eddy Dona to review your progress, manage wound care and provide guidance throughout the recovery process.

As part of post-operative care, the HeaLED Program may be recommended. This program includes treatments and skincare designed to support tissue healing and scar management.

Key elements of the HeaLED Program may include:

  • LED Light Therapy – Applied post-operatively to help reduce swelling and inflammation, which can contribute to discomfort following surgery.
  • Rejuran Therapy – A treatment containing polynucleotides, which are biocompatible molecules intended to promote skin regeneration and support the repair of tissue structure.
  • Medical-grade Skincare – Used to maintain skin health and assist in scar management following surgery.

Microneedling may also be discussed as an additional option for scar care, depending on individual circumstances and healing progress.

What’s the difference between a BIO Lift™ and a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

While both the BIO Lift™ and a traditional Breast Lift (Mastopexy) address breast position and shape, they involve different surgical approaches and are suited to different anatomical needs.

  • BIO Lift™ – This procedure involves the use of breast implants to add volume and support mild breast droop (ptosis). It does not include the skin removal or reshaping that occurs with a traditional Breast Lift (Mastopexy). The incision is placed within the breast fold.
  • Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – This operation focuses on repositioning and reshaping existing breast tissue to address more significant drooping (Ptosis). It typically involves removing excess skin and reshaping the breast without changing overall volume. This approach requires multiple incisions around the areola, vertically on the breast and within the breast fold.

For some individuals, a combination of both procedures, known as Breast Augmentation-Mastopexy, may be considered when both additional volume and tissue repositioning are required.

Re the BIO Lift™ – how can implants create a lifting effect?

The BIO Lift™ involves a specific surgical approach that uses breast implants to achieve enhanced breast fullness and position.

This method incorporates three core components, sometimes referred to as the BIO Lift™ surgical triad:

  • The selection of implant shapes and dimensions intended to support breast tissue and influence nipple position.
    • A planned approach to implant placement designed to optimise tissue support.
    • Internal adjustment of the breast, tailored to the individual’s anatomy.

Together, these elements provide structural support within the breast, contributing to a more elevated and fuller appearance

What are the limitations of the BIO Lift?

The BIO Lift provides additional volume to the breasts and helps lift the nipple and underboob.

While the additional shape and volume are a vital part of the surgical plan, without the support of a bra, the nipples may still appear slightly low, and the underboob may still have some residual looseness. For many patients, this mild droop provides a natural look that is often favoured as it also avoids the extensive scars of a traditional Breast Lift. Of course, the BIO Lift does have some limitations, and ultimately, if the amount of nipple lifting and underboob tightening is not sufficient for the patient, then they can proceed with a formal breast lift at a later date.

Potential risks & complications

Every surgical procedure carries potential risks and complications. It is essential to understand these before deciding whether to proceed with surgery.

Find out more about the potential risks and complications related to surgery >

As with all surgical procedures, a BIO Lift™ carries specific risks and potential complications. These may include:

  • Implant rupture
    • Capsular contracture (scar tissue formation around the implant)
    • Rippling or visible folds of the implant
    • Double bubble (contour irregularity along the lower breast)
    • Symmastia (implants positioned too close together)
