Tuberous Breasts & Breast Asymmetry Surgery Sydney
Tuberous breasts refer to breasts that have an unusually narrow base, small breast volume and often have a large areola. They are quite common and can vary from mild to extreme. For some individuals, they cause no concern, while others would prefer to have them surgically altered.
Similarly, uneven breasts (breast asymmetry) are extremely common in women, with the extent of unevenness varying from mild to severe. Significant breast asymmetry can be caused by congenital disabilities, abnormal development, trauma or previous surgery.
Surgical Options
There are numerous surgical variations available to treat the various types of breast asymmetry and tuberous breasts. Consequently, it is too difficult to describe all the techniques on one web page.
The type of surgery recommended for you will depend on the type and severity of your tuberous or uneven breasts. For example, some surgeries include the use of implants and a Breast Lift (Mastopexy), while at other times, a Breast Reduction may be recommended. More information about these surgeries can be found on our relevant web pages.
Breast Surgery Preparation
If you’re proceeding with surgery, we will direct you to do the following:
- Do not take any blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin or any medicine containing aspirin), anti-inflammatory medications or large amounts of vitamins for two weeks before surgery.
- Do not smoke for at least two weeks before surgery (smoking can lead to serious complications and increase surgical and anaesthetic risks).
Your Initial Consultation with Dr Dona
Your consultation is the first step in assessing whether breast surgery may be appropriate for you. It provides an opportunity to discuss your concerns, explore available surgical options, and ask any questions you may have.
During your consultation with Dr Dona, the discussion will include:
- Your areas of concern, goals and expectations
- Your full medical history, including any health conditions and previous procedures
- Potential surgical options, following a clinical examination
If you are considered a suitable candidate, Dr Dona will explain the proposed procedure in detail, including fees, insurance considerations, recovery, and potential risks and complications, so you have all the information required to make an informed decision.
Breast Surgery Recovery
- Some procedures may be performed in a day surgery facility, allowing patients to return home the same day. More extensive procedures may require admission to a private hospital, such as Norwest Private Hospital or Westmead Private Hospital, and may involve an overnight stay.
- After your procedure, it’s normal to experience some pain or discomfort, and you’ll likely need to take pain relief medication for the first few days. You’ll also be given post-operative prophylactic antibiotics to help with your recovery.
- Swelling and bruising are to be expected, particularly in the first two weeks, but should start to settle after this time.
- Scars are initially quite red, but slowly fade over time.
- Depending on your procedure, you’ll be given an appropriate surgical bra to wear for the first six weeks. After this time, you can wear bras of your choice.
- Smoking should strictly be avoided for at least two weeks after surgery.
- Before your surgery, you’ll be given verbal and written instructions to help you recover quickly and safely. This will include details regarding when you can return to work and perform normal activities.
- The full results of your surgery will typically be seen between three and six months after surgery.
Additional Surgery
Oftentimes, tuberous breasts and issues of breast asymmetry can be quite complex, and therefore, it’s not uncommon for patients to require more than one surgery. Typically, a second surgery is required to ‘fine tune’ the results. In some cases, the original surgical plan may involve staging the procedure over two or more surgical procedures. It all depends on the issues at hand and what is required to give you the greatest chance of success with the least chance of potential complications.
Your Personalised Post-operative Care Plan
Supporting your healing and scar management at every stage…
Before your procedure, you’ll receive a customised and detailed post-operative care plan designed specifically for you. Your recovery program begins shortly after surgery and includes regular weekly in-clinic visits with our nursing team over several weeks.
These appointments allow our nurses and Dr Dona to closely track your healing, provide appropriate wound care, introduce supportive post-operative treatments, and ensure you are progressing through each important recovery milestone.
As part of your aftercare, you’ll also be guided through our HeaLED Program, a structured approach designed to promote faster healing, reduce swelling and support improved scar outcomes.
The HeaLED Program includes:
- LED Light Therapy – Helps calm swelling and inflammation, reduce discomfort, and encourage healing.
- Rejuran Therapy – Supports collagen production, strengthens the skin, and enhances overall skin quality.
- Medical-grade Skincare – Aids skin repair, supports scar recovery, and protects your skin throughout the healing process.
Together, these treatments are designed to help you recover more comfortably and achieve smoother, refined results.
Visiting From Out Of Town?
At Bella Plastic Surgery, we frequently care for patients who travel from interstate and overseas to consult with Dr Dona.
To make your journey as easy and well-organised as possible, we’ve prepared a dedicated information page for our travelling patients. It includes helpful guidance on referrals, pre-operative consultations, accommodation options close to the clinic, post-surgical nursing care, transport, and more.
If you are having breast surgery as a standalone procedure, you will need to remain in Sydney for several days to up to one week after surgery. During this time, you’ll attend daily appointments at our clinic for post-operative reviews, light therapy and any additional in-clinic treatments recommended as part of your recovery plan.
How Much Does The Surgery Cost?
If your breast surgery involves breast implants, it is unlikely that Medicare or your Private Health Insurance will cover you. However, some breast surgeries may be assigned an item number by Medicare (as Medicare deems the procedure medically necessary), and patients will therefore receive some coverage.
You must have a Medicare item number for your Private Health Insurance fund to cover you. It’s important to note that Medicare and your Private Health Insurance will only cover a small proportion of the costs, though. Dr Dona will explain these details to you during your initial consultation at his clinic.
Risks & Potential Complications
All surgical procedures have potential risks and complications, and patients must be aware of these before deciding on surgery.
Find out more about the general potential risks and complications related to surgery here >
In addition to general surgical risks and complications, there are specific potential complications related to Breast Lifts, Breast Reductions and Breast Augmentation surgery. To read more about these risks and potential complications, please visit the relevant pages on this website. Additionally, patients should be aware of the following issues:
- Breast size and shape: No woman has perfectly symmetrical breasts. However, during surgery, Dr Dona will endeavour to ensure the breasts are as close to symmetrical as possible. Please also be aware that the breasts may heal and ‘settle’ into position at different rates.
- Longevity: While surgery can address issues such as asymmetry, it cannot stop the ageing process. Over time, normal factors such as ageing, weight changes, gravity, breastfeeding and hormonal changes will continue to affect the size and shape of your breasts. If you’d like your breasts to maintain their same shape, you may want to consider further surgery at a later stage.
- Scarring: All surgery leaves scars. However, our team will advise you on ways to minimise the appearance of scarring through treatments such as LED light therapy, microneedling, silicone strips and scar creams.
