Pubic Lift (Monsplasty) Sydney
A Pubic Lift (Monsplasty) is a surgical procedure performed on the upper pubic area. This area is often known as the pubic mound or the fatty upper pubic area (FUPA). A Monsplasty aims to reposition and reduce excess tissue, thereby changing the shape and proportions of the pubic region relative to the abdominal wall.
Although it can be performed as an individual procedure, a Monsplasty may also be performed in conjunction with other procedures, including Abdominoplasty. Surgical recommendations are based on individual clinical assessment.
Why Does The Mons Pubis Enlarge?
The mons pubis is the area that sits directly above the genitals, on top of the pubic bone. For some, it is more noticeable than for others. The mons region can become enlarged and/or droopy (ptotic) for a variety of reasons, such as:
- Massive Weight Loss (MWL): Following MWL, individuals are often left with sagging or redundant skin throughout the body, with the mons frequently affected.
- Pregnancy: Stretched skin, hormonal changes and weakened connective tissue all may lead to drooping or fullness in the mons area.
- Cesarean scars: A cesarean scar can sometimes develop tightness and tethering, making the tissue below (the mons) more pronounced.
- Ageing: As we age, all our tissues lose elasticity. Therefore, the mons begins to sag.
- Genetics: Some individuals are simply more genetically predisposed to having more fatty tissue in this area.
Regardless of the reason, if the mons pubis enlarges, it can negatively impact an individual’s quality of life, causing problems such as hygiene issues, rashes, discomfort, intimacy concerns and issues wearing certain clothing.
What Does A Pubic Lift (Monsplasty) Involve?
Monsplasty surgery procedures vary, depending on the patient’s pathology, with their issues being any of the following:
1: Excess fatty tissue – with good skin quality and no ptosis (droop)
2: Excess fatty tissue – with ptosis (droop). This is typically associated with poor skin quality, which is often the case following MWL.
A droop in the mons area can be categorised as mild, moderate or severe. When severe, the mons region completely detaches from the abdominal wall, resulting in displacement of the vulva. (In males, this can result in a buried penis.)
Monsplasty surgery aims to create a smoother, firmer contour from the pubic region to the abdominal wall. Depending on the patient’s requirements, the surgery may involve:
- Removing excess skin
- Removing excess fat
- Lifting and tightening the mons region to help flatten and tighten the area. (In females, this lifts and repositions the vulva. In males, this helps expose a buried penis.)
The Surgical Procedure
If a Monsplasty is being performed in isolation, it takes approximately one to two hours and is typically performed under general anaesthesia. When combined with an Abdominoplasty, it will take the same time as the usual procedure, which is anywhere from two to five hours.
During surgery, the area requiring lifting and/or reducing is first marked. Then, all excess skin and/or fatty tissue is removed. If the mons area was ptotic (saggy), it is lifted to create a flatter, tighter and elevated contour. Finally, the incisions are closed in multiple layers. The incision mark (scar) is placed low enough to comfortably hide under regular underwear.
Your Initial Consultation with Dr Dona
Your consultation is the first step in determining whether Monsplasty surgery is right for you. It’s also a chance to talk through the details and have all your questions answered.
During your appointment, you’ll discuss:
- Your goals and areas of concern
- Your medical history and any previous procedures
- The best surgical options for you (after Dr Dona examines your breasts)
If Dr Dona determines that you are a suitable candidate, he will explain what the surgery involves, including costs, insurance, recovery and all possible risks or complications.
Dr Dona is approachable and thorough. He’ll take the time to listen and ensure you feel comfortable, informed and confident before making any decisions.
Weight Loss Medications & Surgery
If you’re taking prescription weight loss medication like a GLP-1 receptor agonist or a dual GLP-1/GIP agonist, there’s no need to stop your medication. However, you must follow a few simple precautions before surgery. These steps help keep you safe and minimise any risks during anaesthesia
Travelling From Out Of Town?
At Bella Plastic Surgery, we regularly see patients who travel from interstate and overseas to see Dr Dona.
To help make your trip as smooth and stress-free as possible, we’ve created a dedicated information page for our travelling patients. There, you’ll find helpful details about referrals, pre-surgery consultations, nearby accommodation, nursing support, transport options and more.
If you’re having a Pubic Lift in isolation, you must stay in Sydney for several days to a week post-surgery and be seen in our clinic daily for post-operative monitoring, light therapy sessions and other recommended in-clinic treatments.
Monplasty Costs
The cost of a Monsplasty varies, depending on factors such as the time required in theatre, your anatomy, the amount of skin to be removed, and the complexity of the procedure. These factors will be discussed with you during your initial consultation with Dr Dona.
Will I receive a Medicare rebate?
When patients have functional issues such as excess skin causing hygiene problems, rashes or discomfort, a Monsplasty may be considered reconstructive rather than cosmetic. In these cases, patients may attract an item number from Medicare, which will qualify them for a small rebate towards Dr Dona’s fee, reducing their out-of-pocket expenses. Procedures performed for cosmetic reasons only are not eligible for a Medicare rebate.
Will I receive a Private Health Insurance rebate?
Provided a Medicare item number is approved, and you hold an appropriate level of hospital cover, you may also receive a contribution from your health insurance fund.
