Female Genital Surgery Sydney

Female genital surgery encompasses a range of procedures in the genital area that are either reconstructive or cosmetic. Often, these procedures address aesthetic concerns, cultural concerns or discomfort from physical activities or clothing irritation. Common procedures include Labiaplasty, Vaginaplasty, Vulvar Liposuction, Hymenoplasty And Monsplasty.

Types of Female Genital Surgery

Labiaplasty

A Labiaplasty (aka Labioplasty, Labia Reduction, Labial Reduction) is a plastic surgery procedure performed to minimise the size of the inner lips of the vagina (labia minora), which are skin folds that surround the vulva. The labia minora vary significantly in size, shape and colour and can change as a result of ageing, sexual activity, childbirth or trauma. Sometimes, the labia minora are large and cause discomfort while wearing certain clothing or performing various activities. At other times, the labia minora may be asymmetrical or appear in a way that causes the woman distress or embarrassment.

Clitoral Hood Reduction (Hoodectomy)

A Clitora Hood Reduction is a plastic surgery procedure that reduces the length or width of the clitoral hood (the excess skin covering the clitoris), further exposing the clitoris. Some women have more skin in this area, making it more prominent and potentially causing discomfort during intimacy or exercise. It can also affect hygiene or cause concerns about appearance. In some cases, particularly if the clitoral area was significantly covered, reducing the size of the clitoral hood can increase sensitivity. Importantly, the clitoris is not touched during the procedure, and care is taken to preserve normal sensation and function.

This procedure is often combined with or forms part of a Labiaplasty.

Vaginoplasty

A Vaginoplasty (aka Vaginal Tightening) is a reconstructive surgical procedure designed to address damaged or stretched vaginal muscles and tissues, usually resulting from childbirth. The procedure effectively tightens the vagina. However, a Vaginoplasty can also be performed for individuals recovering from medical conditions, such as cancer or those with congenital conditions.

Vulvar Liposuction

Vulvar Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure where excess fatty tissue in the labia majora is removed. The procedure is usually performed via liposuction alone. Individuals seeking the procedure often have concerns regarding comfort or appearance in this area.

Pubic Lift (Monsplasty)

A Pubic Lift (Monsplasty) is a reconstructive surgical procedure performed when skin and tissues in the pubic area (mons pubis) hang downwards over the pubic bone. This can occur due to changes in weight or age. During the procedure, excess skin and fat are surgically removed from the region. The skin is then repositioned, lifting the entire pubic area. A Pubic Lift is often performed in conjunction with a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty).

Labial Enhancement

Labial Enhancement is a surgical procedure that adds size and shape to the outer area of the vagina (labia majora). Typically, this procedure is performed with a fat transfer. This is a two-part procedure that involves liposuction of fat from one area of the body, such as the abdomen, followed by its injection into the labia majora.

Hymenoplasty

A Hymenoplasty is a reconstructive surgical procedure typically performed for cultural or religious reasons. The hymen is a thin membrane at the vaginal opening. It often tears due to exercise, fingers, intercourse, trauma or tampons.

Your Initial Consultation with Dr Dona

Your consultation with Dr Dona is the first step in determining whether genital surgery is appropriate for you. During the appointment, Dr Dona will:

  • Listen to your goals or concerns.
  • Review your medical history and note any previous procedures.
  • Discuss the best surgical options for you (if he deems you suitable for a procedure). He will also explain what the surgery involves, including costs, insurance, recovery and all possible risks or complications.

Recovery from surgery

Genital surgery procedures are typically performed as a day surgery procedure, meaning you will go home on the same day as your procedure. Before you leave, you’ll be given medications, such as prophylactic antibiotics and pain relief. We’ll also provide you with written and verbal after-care instructions.

Most discomfort should subside within the first few days to a week, depending on your procedure. However, every individual is different, and some patients may experience mild discomfort for a couple more weeks.

Depending on your surgery, you can likely return to everyday activities after a few days or a week. You’ll be given more detailed information about returning to activities by Dr Dona. Additionally, if you ever have any questions about your activity levels (or any other issue), you can always call the clinic for detailed advice.

By four weeks, most of the swelling will have subsided.

LED Light Therapy

Soon after your procedure, we’ll ask you to return regularly to the clinic for LED Light Therapy. This is a non-invasive treatment that:

  • Reduces swelling and inflammation
  • Helps minimise pain and discomfort
  • Accelerates wound healing and tissue regeneration
  • Optimises scar formation for neater, more refined scars

LED Therapy typically begins on the day of your hospital discharge, although the timing may vary depending on your procedure.

Costs, Medicare & Private Health Insurance

The majority of genital surgery is classified as genital cosmetic surgery and is therefore not covered by Medicare or Private health insurance. However, there are rare exceptions. Dr Dona will clarify this issue with you during your initial consultation. After your consultation, you will also be given an itemised list of all costs associated with your procedure.

Potential Risks & Complications

All surgical procedures carry potential risks and complications. We thoroughly encourage you to be aware of all possible risks and complications before committing to your genital surgery procedure.
